Michael left the MTC early in the morning July 18th. He was the travel leader and was able to call us for about 10 minutes from the SLC airport after making sure each missionary was checkedin and ready to go. We didn't get to talk to him during his layover in Atlanta because their plane was late and they barely made the connection. When they arrived in Amsterdam, the calling card that we had so carefully researched and sent to Michael didn't work. Or should I say the pay phone wouldn't allow it to work. Michael called us collect twice trying to figure out what to do and how to make it work. Eventually he just had to buy another calling card that did work for 20Euro and we got to talk for about 12 minutes. His layover was almost 4 hours long so I was anticipating a much longer phone call. Oh well, live and learn. If you ever fly through Amsterdam I hope you have a cell phone if you need to make a call! It was great to hear his voice! He spoke to us in Romanian and it was so cool! Michael was worried when he got his call to Romania after learning that they roll their R's. That is something he has never been able to do and didn't know what he would do without this critical part of the language. Before he went into the MTC, President Warnick blessed him with the gift of tongues and that blessing has come true. Michael's R's were rolling just fine when we talked to him. He says that he can't roll them alone but when he is speaking the language he is able to roll them. What a wonderful blessing!
Here he is with President Hill and his wife. They took them to some gardens in Bucharest where Elder Russell M. Nelson dedicated Romania for the preaching of the gospel.
Here is Michael with his new companion, Elder Hyatt. They will be serving in Deva, a city of about 70,000 people, an 9 hour train ride Northwest of Bucharest.
