Jumping through hoops

Caroline is a certified lifeguard after a week long class in which she gave up her Spring break to be in classes all day. She applied to work as a lifeguard for Orem city and got a job. There are a few hoops to jump through before she can officially start working, though. There was paperwork for the IRS, training videos and lastly, the drug test. She was given 24 hours to show up and give a urine sample for a drug test. We decided to head over at 7AM, right when they opened so she could avoid lines and be right on her way to school by 7:45. We got there and were 2nd in line. They took her back and she was in there for quite a while. I asked where she was and went back to check on her. Apparently she was having difficulty. One huge mistake made that morning is that she went to the bathroom when she got up so she was in the back trying to drink water and move things along. The other person in line that morning was another lifeguard and she was in the same boat. We tried everything: holding hand under running warm water, drinking cold water, chugging contests, drinking soda, jumping up and down. Nothing. The worst part was, every time she went in and didn't produce enough urine, they threw it away and you had to start over from an empty cup each time. Uggggg!

Ah, the bladder of a teenager. By now, school has started and we have exhausted just about every creative option. Caroline and this other girl were in hysterics. Who knew a drug test could be so much fun? After a while I thought maybe if she got really warmed up and had a little nap maybe it would work. So, both girls got comfy and had a little nap. Here is Caroline on the floor of the waiting room with a blanket the front desk lady found and her swim towel from the car. We would have just left and come back later but if you start the process for a drug test and then leave without giving a sample, it is considered non-compliance, oh my.

After 17 cups of water, a sprite and a nap, these girls stood up, gravity took over and they were then both dancing around like little 2 year olds. Success! It was a humorous diversion from the regular old day.

senior showcase and soccer party

At the end of each school year the drama department has a program to spotlight the seniors. Even though Katie isn't a senior she got to be in several numbers. This one is "Mama Mia".

We have really enjoyed attending all of the Orem High drama productions. Katie has done a great job and really enjoys it.

David's soccer team had an end of the year party at Nana and Grandpa's pool this year. Not only is it the end of the season but end of this team. They have played together for 4 years. Their coach is not going to coach next year and most of the boys are moving on to AAA soccer now.

Michael's missionary farewell

Michael did a wonderful job on his talk. It's one of those moments you have imagined for a long time and it's a bit surreal to actually have it arrive. A lot of friends and family came to hear him talk and then later we got together at the house for lunch. My friend Lesa Cox and I made these chocolate cupcakes with strawberry frosting for the dessert.

We had pulled pork sandwiches and lots and lots of people brought salads and sides to share. What awesome friends and family I have.

We had a great turnout and a lot of people were able to come and visit and say good-bye to Michael.

Everyone had a fun time and the weather made it really nice to be outside also.

We got a Romanian flag to fly while Michael is gone. We will miss him so much but are also so excited for the experiences he will have.
